The Little Boy And His Teddy Bear
A true story from the childhood of Benedict XVI told by Georg Ratzinger, the brother of Pope Benedict XVI.
Once upon a time there was a little boy who lived in a small Bavarian village. His parents were well respected, but also very modest. Opposite of his home was a small grocer’s shop where you could buy all the things of every day necessities. At Christmas time, the shop window was always beautifully decorated. And here, in the middle of the Christmas display sat a little Teddy bear, surrounded by Christmas tree, glass ornaments and sweets. With his big, brown button eyes, he looked innocently at everyone who passed the shop window. Every day the little boy ran to the shop across the street and pressed his little nose against the window pane. He had fallen madly in love with the little Teddy bear and over the time the two had become real friends.
However, one day when the little boy paid a visit to his friend, the Teddy Bear had disappeared from the shop window. The little boy was terribly sad and big tears rolled down his delicate face. Whoever he asked, no one could tell him why the Teddy bear was no longer there. So many days passed. Christmas was approaching and sadly the Teddy Bear was still missing. When Christmas Eve came, the parents went with their children to their small village church to celebrate Christmas. Afterwards, the family returned to their home to play music and sing together. The children had to wait in front of the door until all the candles on the Christmas tree were lit. When the Christmas bell rang and their father opened the big door to the living room, the whole room shined brightly. The little boy rubbed his eyes in astonishment. Here, in the light of glowing candles, the Teddy bear from the shop across the street sat under the big Christmas tree. The mother had purchased him for the little boy.
